Unraveling Apologies: Rethinking the Words "I'm Sorry"
SHOW NOTES: Episode 19
Do you know how to truly apologize?
On this episode, I dive into this topic more. Many of us struggle when it comes to apologizing and that can actually stem from our childhood. Apologies are more than just saying the words, "I'm sorry”.
Understanding the purpose and importance of apologies is crucial for navigating and resolving conflicts in relationships. By sincerely apologizing, you can show that you genuinely care about the other person's feelings and are willing to take responsibility for your actions.
Apologies also play a significant role in moving past conflicts and fostering growth in relationships. When a person receives a sincere apology, they are more likely to feel understood and validated, which can help alleviate negative feelings. When you can acknowledge your own mistakes and show a willingness to change, you can create an environment of trust and open communication.
They should not be seen as a one-time fix all solution thought. They require practice and ongoing effort to make sure they are genuine. I give some tips on this in today’s episode. For instance, the aplogy should be sincere and you should show that you are trying to change and turn away from the behavior that you are apologizing for. Apologies should also never sound like, “I’m sorry BUT…” or “I’m sorry THAT YOU…” or “I’m sorry YOU feel that way…” When you apologize but then place the blame somewhere else, it takes away from your apology completely. Remember an apology is not about “being right” but by accepting that you have hurt someone and you are working to mend that relationship through admitting that you are sorry and working towards not repeating the hurt in the future. I also share about teaching our children to apologize and some practical tips you can use.
Tune in to gain a better understanding of apologies and how they can positively impact our relationships!
