What Does Discipleship Really Mean? with Kristel Acevedo

SHOW NOTES: Episode 30

What does discipleship really mean?

I have Kristel Acevedo on. Kristel is the spiritual formation and discipleship director at Transformation Church in South Carolina.

We dive into what discipleship is and what it looks like in daily life. Discipleship is often misunderstood and narrowly defined but Kristen explains that discipleship is much deeper and is often shown through worship, connection, service, giving, and inviting. These characteristics aren’t a checklist but part of a walk with Jesus and allowing the Holy Spirit to work through those acts.

Kristel explained the threefold nature of salvation: justification, sanctification, and glorification. She shared that salvation is not just a one-time event but a lifelong process. Justification occurs instantly when a person accepts Jesus, and they are no longer guilty of their sins. Glorification will happen in the future when Jesus returns and believers are fully transformed. In the meantime, believers are in the process of sanctification, which is the act of becoming holy and looking more like Jesus.

She shared that sanctification is a slow process and she encouraged people to remember that slow growth is still growth and that it is not about our timing but God's timing. She also explained that both salvation and growth are the work of the Holy Spirit, not something we can achieve on our own.

Remember, discipleship is a journey, not a destination. Let's continue to walk this path together, learning and growing as we go.

This was a wonderful conversation with Kristel and I hope that it helped you dive deeper into discipleship and what it really means. I am grateful for Kristel’s insights and would love to hear a key takeaway that you had from today’s episode on Instagram: @marandakirk or send me an email: ru@marandakirk.com!
